Machu Picchu CUZCO AND MACHU PICCHU
The city of Cuzco is the archeological capital of the Americas. This city, called the "Navel of the Universe" by the Incas, mixes the Inca culture with colonial style. Cuzco is also the point of departure for visits to Machu Picchu and other ruins in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Urubamba. It is located high in the Southeastern Andes at an altitude of 11,000 feet. The climate is generally mild, cold and dry, with an average of 60° F.

Machu Picchu, called the Lost City of the Incas, can be reached by either train or helicopter. However, the most impressive way to approach it is on foot, as the Incas did. Reaching crests along the Inca Trail reveals views of snow-capped peaks. Descending to the jungle, the trail becomes a leafy tunnel as you travel through luxuriant tropical greenery. Climbing the last rock stairway to Inti Punku, you see spread out before you the splendor of the Inca Empire — "Machu Picchu".
